Welcome back to the eighth entry into the “Figure Profile” series! This entry is special because Lady Jaye marks the first female figure to join my growing collection of GI Joe team members! Lady Jaye’s character in the Sunbow animated series was one of my absolute favorites to watch, she was not afraid to mix it up with the boys and certainly had no problem taking on the evil forces of Cobra. I remember thinking how cool she was charging up the field of battle alongside Flint, Sgt Slaughter, Alpine and Dusty. The first time I laid eyes on the Lady Jaye action figure at a local K-Mart, I recall feeling underwhelmed because I remember thinking “this looks nothing like Lady Jaye!” in the Sunbow cartoon series, Lady Jaye wore dark drab military fatigues, didn’t wear a cap, she didn’t have a javelin gun, and of course she was “super pretty” as I remember thinking at the time. So the figure was a bit of an enigma to me as I struggled to understand how they could have gotten her so “wrong”
All that disappointment aside, and I use that term very loosely, I had a lot of fun playing with the figure because more so than Scarlett, Lady Jaye was, in my young mind, a better GI Joe member than boring ol’ Scarlett. Unbeknownst to me, I started watching the cartoon a little late and missed season one where Scarlett was prominently featured, so Lady Jaye was always my “first” Lady Joe. Plus what kid didn’t have a crush on Lady Jaye? Admit it! When Rhino started releasing GI Joe in season DVD packs I immediately purchased my set and having watched the complete series start to finish, I found that I still preferred Lady Jaye over Scarlet. Plus I could appreciate her relationship with Flint which only added to the both character’s depth and added another layer to their dynamic that I can’t say I caught on to as a kid.
This Lady Jaye figure came from an Ebay auction and was in excellent condition upon arrival. All she needed from me was a top to bottom cleaning and she was perfect. She came complete with all her gear but no file card, but I hope to get one from Nerdragetoys.com, they stock file cards and various vintage pieces and figures.
