Ahh Dial-Tone, this figure holds a hallowed place in my childhood memory as the figure that was ripped off by the kid down the block. I don’t remember the kids last name now, but I remember his first name was Donald or as I came to know him “Rip-Off”. Rip-Off came over all the time and was a pretty good friend. Like so many kids our age we spent hours out in the backyard playing Joe and having a blast, little did I know that Rip-Off would soon commit a most heinous crime- GI Joe theft! As I recall, we had both added new figure to our collections and as we had done so many times in the past, we ran over to each others houses to show them off. The door bell rang and there stood Rip-off holding a brand new Mainframe figure. Not to be outdone, I proudly showed off my brand spanking new Dial-Tone to which he took a real liking to as he requested to hold him an unusual number of times. My mom called my name and asked to me to take out the trash, once done I ran back to my room and as soon as I walked in Rip-Off suddenly had to go home, imagine that. We said our goodbyes and when I went to look for my Dial-Tone, he was gone! Nowhere to be found! I looked frantically in my sheets, under my bed, behind the door, and nothing. I then started retracing all my steps to no avail, Dial-Tone was gone. My little heart was crushed. A few days later, guess who suddenly had a new Dial-Tone? That’s right, Rip-Off! that snake in the grass! Funny, that it didn’t actually register that Rip-Off had taken my figure until years later once I wised up. The worst part is that my Mom blamed me for losing a new figure! she was upset because I “never took care of anything” it was a travesty I tell you! Well here we are 20 some-odd years later with a new (to me) Dial-Tone!
Purchased the figure on Ebay for a reasonable 13$ plus shipping and he came complete with his radio backpack, rifle, and file card. Waiting for him to arrive was murder because I knew that in a few short days Dial-Tone and I would be re-united! When he finally arrived, I was really pleased at his condition. Clean screws and tight joints galore! what more could a Joe collector ask for? He had some minor nicks and scratches that were quickly fixed with my trusty Tamiya paints. Still gotta touch a few things here and there but excellent condition overall.
Hope you’ve enjoyed yet another installment of Figure Profile and hope that you’ll join us again next Monday, Until then my friends.
P.S. YOU STILL SUCK RIP-OFF!
