Here we go, another Monday night, another GI Joe figure profile and this week I’m featuring my second favorite Joe of all time right behind Snake Eyes, I’m talking about the loud-mouth, lazy and brash, Shipwreck. I always looked up to Shipwreck from the cartoon as kid because for some reason that I couldn’t put my finger on, he reminded me of my real life father whom I look up to this day. Plus Shipwreck was just cool. He had a pet parrot named Polly who constantly mocked him and vice versa, he held a general disregard for orders, had that distinct voice thanks to voice actor Niel Ross, and really what kid doesn’t like a rebel?
The figure was really cool too as he stood out from the rest of the Joes thanks to his uniform and his sailor blues. I unfortunately lost Polly along with the rest of Shipwreck’s accessories very early on, lost at sea (bathtub) on some globe trotting adventure I’m sure. I was so attached to this figure that I have vivid memories of taking Shipwreck to the park, school and even Church because you never knew when or where Cobra could attack!
This particular figure came from an Ebay auction and came complete with Polly, gun, rope and hook and of course his file card. After the clean up, I did a quick paint touch up on his gloves, shoes, and a touch of gold on his belt buckle as he was good to go. I’m really fortunate as the figure came with a clean tattoo on his forearm. As a kid, I always wanted a SHARC for Shipwreck to sit in and I never got one….hmmm. I think a second vehicle might be joining my collection pretty soon ; )
